When to Plant Flowering Bulbs

Bulbs are a gardener’s treasure – these self-sufficient bloomers require minimal attention as they contain all the nutrients required to grow on their own. They can basically be planted anywhere indoor or out, but their bloom is dependent on the season. After two months or so, bulbs show their magic!

It takes some knowledge when it comes to planting bulbs – they should be planted twice as deep as their width with the pointy side up. It’s best not to over water as this can cause rotting. If you are planting bulbs in a pot, you’ll want to make sure there are plenty planted for a beautiful show once they flower.

Spring Blooming

Now is the time to plant bulbs for a springtime show – anywhere from mid March to late May. These flowers include freesias, tulips, and daffodils. It’s recommended to store tulip bulbs in the fridge for at least six weeks before planting to result in longer and more uniform stems.

Autumn Blooming

Requiring the least amount of care, autumn flowering bulbs should be planted anywhere from September to November. They are perfect for the novice gardener. These flowers include crocus, dahlias, and begonias.

Summer Blooming

Lillies are the most popular summer flowering bulb plants, which should be planted during the winter months. It’s a good idea to do your research before planting summer lillies as different species require different care. For example, blood lily bulbs should be planted in well drained soil with the bulb protruding out.
