4 Tips to Making a Fire Pit

It can be tricky to enjoy your outdoor space in winter – barbies in the cold are not pleasant. But there is a solution if you want to make the most of your yard all year round, get a fire pit! Social and warming, fire pits allow you and your family and friends to spend time together outside in the winter….and roast marshmallows.

While you can pick one up at your local Bunnings in any price range from $50 to $500, there’s something rewarding about sitting around a pit you’ve done yourself. If you’re willing to give it a go, here are 4 tips to consider before building the perfect accessory for your outdoor space.

  1. Figure out how you will use it

Will you use a fire pit with children, with friends, or just for cooking? Knowing its use will help you find a location (in step 2) and determine its size. If you have children, you may want to place it in an open centralised spot allowing you to enjoy the fire with friends while still being able to watch the kids play. If it’s for cooking purposes then a bigger pit is required.

  1. Decide on the location

Safety is key when choosing where your fire pit will live as it needs to be away from anything flammable. It’s even worth keeping it close to your garden hose in the event of an accident. You’ll also want to consider the direction of the wind as the smoke can travel into your home or even next door. Make sure to be mindful of your neighbours!

  1. Choose the best material

If you’re planning to keep your fire pit outside all year long then you’ll want to construct it with an extremely durable material that can withstand poor weather conditions. Steel is one of the strongest options.

  1. Find a place for firewood

Having your firewood ready to go makes things a lot easier and enjoyable so we recommend designating a place to store your firewood. It can be stylish and near the firepit to enhance the experience or simply tucked away but within reach.
