Many of us are dreaming of being on a tropical island somewhere overseas, but as that’s not possible we have to make do with what we have. While we can travel domestically to one of the beautiful islands or beaches in our country, we can also make our own home feel a little more like a holiday destination. You can easily create a tropical jungle feel to a room or all around your home and the best way to do that is through houseplants.
The following plants are lush enough to bring the tropics to you and do not require indirect sunlight making them perfect for indoors.
Orchid/Orchidaceae
For a splash of vibrancy, orchids have gorgeous tropic blooms and work great on any table or mantlepiece. However, they can be a bit tricky to grow as they grow off tree branches rather than soil. It’s recommended to use a proper orchid pot and potting mix, which is made up of bark & lava rocks.
Bird of Paradise/Strelitzia reginae
The long high stems and large luscious leaves make the Bird of Paradise plant a no brainer when it comes to tropical vibes. But what makes this plant ‘bird-like’ are the stunning orange and blue flowers that bloom – paradise in a pot!
Growing up to 2.5 metres tall, Money Trees can bring financial reward according to some cultures so not only will it bring tropic vibes to your home, it may also take you to tropic lands!
Aglaonema/Aglaonema commutatum
Unique for its speckled look, aglaonema comes in an array of colours including hot pink – you can’t get more island-y than green & pink! The more sunlight this plant gets, the more speckled it will be.
Monstera/Monstera deliciosa
The wide green leaves of a monstera plant are one of the most common in jungle prints and digital art – and with good reason! They can climb quite high so make sure to grow it with a pole and you may need to dust it regularly.
