There’s a reason why interior decorating is a career – as much of a good taste one can have, there are going to be mistakes, unless we are an experienced professional of course. The simplest thing can make a home look and feel awkward. We tend to focus on the right things to do decorwise rather than avoid the wrong things so we’ve put together interior decorating mistakes for you to fix and/or prevent.
HANGING ART OR PHOTOS TOO HIGH
Wall art including framed images are best viewed at eye level. There’s no point hanging something that’s not visible plus it looks and feels strange if people have to stretch to view your art. Collages are a great way to use up lots of space and in this case it’s okay to have art too high or too low as there will still be a centerpiece at eye level.
TOO MANY CUSHIONS
Cushions are great whether on your sofa, bed, or chairs, but it’s possible to go overboard regardless of how cozy and comfortable they are. A sofa with too many cushions may start to look messy so it’s best to stick with 2 for small sofas and 4 for larger sofas.
CURTAINS HANGING TOO SHORT
Curtains and drapes should softly touch the floor (for longer window frames). If they fall too short, they may actually make the height of a room appear short as well.
MATCHING TOO MUCH
Some take matching too seriously – it’s understandable in fashion, but not home decor. The thought of matching your artwork to your duvet cover or your couch may seem like a good idea, but it will really just clash. Different colours and styles give a room dimension and character.
TOO MUCH SYMMETRY
If your decor and furniture are all a bit too symmetrical, the room will start to feel cold. Get fun & creative with different shapes and sizes.
