How to Clean Your Kitchen Rubbish Bin

Many of us do a great job at throwing out the rubbish weekly, but often we overlook cleaning the kitchen bin itself. It is an unpleasant task after all, but it needs to be done! Rubbish bins with or without rubbish (unless brand spanking new) are filled with germs, bacteria, and foul odours so it’s important to clean and disinfect it for your health & sanity (no one enjoys the smell of rotten food lingering). This may be a task you dread and keep putting to the side, but it doesn’t have to be.

We want to make things easy for you so we’re sharing what works for us in hopes that it will help you. Before getting started, we highly recommend doing this on a nice sunny day as you’ll want to avoid doing this in the house. The sunshine will motivate you plus it also speeds up the drying process and helps kill germs. All you need is a cleaning solution (DIY by mixing vinegar, dish soap or essential oil, and water), a toilet brush, a pair of gloves, and a hose. Ready?

  1. Make your cleaning solution

We recommend mixing a solution in a spray bottle with ½ cup white vinegar, ½ cup water, and 10 drops of eucalyptus oil, which has antimicrobial properties & a fresh scent. It’s always best to use natural products avoiding products that contain harmful chemicals. However, if you feel your bin is germier than usual – you may want to consider something stronger.

  1. Glove up & empty out

Before deep cleaning, make sure there is nothing left in your bin. There may be some food particles stuck to the surface so wipe them away.

  1. Spray everywhere

Use your solution all over the inside and outside of your bin, including the cover. Let it sit & soak in for 10 minutes.

  1. Scrub

Grab your toilet brush and scrub firmly everywhere your solution is. Make sure to get up that grime!

  1. Rinse

Get your hose and set it to jet stream if possible to help lift up anything you may have missed. Give it a good rinse and leave it in the sun to dry.

  1. Sprinkle

Before putting in your next rubbish bag when the bin is dry, sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the bin to help absorb any bad odours in your next fill.
